CHILD SAFE ORGANISATION

Helen Walker Occupational Therapy (HWOT) is committed to the safety, wellbeing, and participation of all children and young people. We uphold and maintain Queensland Child Safe Organisation Standards, and embed the Universal Principle to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are welcomed, respected, and supported to feel culturally safe.

 

We recognise and respect the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the children and families we support and hold zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO:

  • Providing a child-safe and child-friendly environment, where all children and young people are respected, valued, and protected from harm. We actively uphold the rights of children to feel safe and to be safe, to have a voice in decisions that affect them, and to access services that promote their wellbeing, development and strong sense of confidence.
  • Recognising and celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, language and traditions within our community including First Nations People, those with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ and those with diverse abilities. At our core we aim to provide a safe, inclusive space for all -embracing equity and cultural safety. We hold zero tolerance for abuse, neglect, or exploitation.’

EXPECTED BEHAVIOURS

All HWOT staff, contractors and volunteers are responsible for promoting the safety, wellbeing, and inclusion of children and young people, acting to protect them from harm in all aspects of our services.

THEY ARE EXPECTED TO:

  • Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment
  • Act respectfully, inclusively, and professionally with children and families
  • Maintain professional boundaries at all times
  • Obtain parental/caregiver consent for services and ensure children understand what to expect
  • Use child-friendly communication and encourage children to speak up
  • Respect cultural, linguistic, and individual differences
  • Follow all safety, privacy, and risk management policies and procedures
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to any concerns, suspicions, or allegations of harm

QUEENSLAND CHILD SAFE ORGANISATION STANDARDS:

  1. Leadership & Culture:
    Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in our values, culture, strategic planning, and governance processes. Cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children is a core governance priority.
  2. Voice of Children:
    Children are safe, informed about their rights and actively participate in decisions affecting them.
  3. Family & Community:
    Families and Communities are Informed and Involved in prompting child safety
  4. Equity & Diversity:
    Equity is upheld and promoted, Diversity is Respected in policy and practice.
    We take proactive steps to eliminate barriers to participation for children with disabilities, children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and LGBTQIA+ young people, and ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children can access culturally appropriate supports.
  5. People:
    People working with children are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
  6. Complaints Management:
    Processes to respond to complaints and concerns are trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, accessible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, and child-focused.
  7. Knowledge & Skills:
    Staff and volunteers of HWOT are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and awareness to keep children safe through ongoing education, training and trauma-informed practice.
  8. Physical & Online Environments:
    Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing and minimise the opportunity for children to be harmed.
  9. Continuous Improvement:
    Implementation of the Child Safe Organisation Standards is regularly reviewed, audited and improved.
  10. Policy & Procedures:
    Policies and procedures are documented and accessible, detailing how the organisation is safe for children
